As the winter months sets in, the weather turns colder, windier and drier, your skin will need some extra help and protection from the elements. Why does winter dry out skin?
Skin is stripped of its natural moisture by wind, central heating and low humidity, especially is drier areas of the country. During the winter months, the skin finds it harder to retain water thus resulting in dehydration, which leads to premature aging, fine lines and wrinkles.
The barrier that prevents skin getting dry is in the outer most layer, the stratum corneum. When the skin becomes dry, the lipids (fats) that help stick skin cells together and prevent water loss are lost. Without them, the cells do not stick well together and flake off. The skin's barrier is no longer effective because it's lost some of its natural protective moisturizers - known as 'natural moisturizing factors'.
The following winter skin care tips will help adjust your skin care routine:
Hydrate, Seal & Heal - Ingredients to look for are lipids, which mimic the normal natural moisturizing factors, humectants such as hylauronic acid and heavy water which hold moisture in the skin. Peptides and Epidermal Growth Factor regenerates, reduces wrinkles and rapidly helps recover the skin all season long.
The SkinSpa’s must haves for the winter; designed to hydrate and protect the skin:
Exfoliation - Helps to remove dead skin cells and allow the skin to absorb more moisture.
Gently exfoliate twice a week with Epicuren Extra Fine Citrus Scrub Retinols - Help to keep skin smooth. However, the exfoliation with harsh Retinol's makes skin more sensitive to chapping from cold, dry, windy weather, so choose wisely. Epicuren Alpha Lipoic Serum and PCA Retinol Renewal and A & E Serum provide great hydrator's during the winter months while smoothing away wrinkles.
Cleansing - Leave acid-based cleansers (glycolic, salicylic and alpha-hydroxy acids) behind. Instead, cleanse with a creamy, moisturizing face wash like Guinot Rose Cleanser or Epicuren Apricot Cream Cleanser which gently remove makeup and excess dirt without overstripping the natural oils in your skin.
As always, we are here to help with your skincare choices at The SkinSpa Institute. Stop by the spa, give us a call or email us with your questions and concerns. skinspa@live.com
