When the skin becomes dry, the lipids (fats) that help stick skin cells together and prevent water loss are lost. Without them, the cells do not stick well together and flake off. The skin's barrier is no longer effective because it's lost some of its natural protective moisturizers - known as 'natural moisturizing factors'.

The following winter skin care tips will help adjust your skin care routine:

Hydrate, Seal & Heal - Ingredients to look for are lipids, which mimic the normal natural moisturizing factors, humectants such as hylauronic acid and heavy water which hold moisture in the skin. Our body can become over-taxed trying to purge itself of these dangerous substances becoming unable to expel them through the usual means of the lungs, skin, kidneys and bowels.

When the body cannot rid itself of harmful toxin, they are stored in various body parts such as fat, joints, the brain and other tissues. Over time, the accumulations of toxins can lead not only to a lack of vitality and beauty, but also serious illness. Some of the symptoms experienced with a buildup of toxins:

- A general lack of well being.
- Poor skin complexion/acne.
- Congestion and poor breathing
- Feeling tired even after a good night’s sleep.
- Bloating, poor digestion, gas or constipation.

Detoxification is a great way to reverse damage and regain greater health, energy and beauty.

How to Detox?
Aerobic exercise is a key component of any detoxification regime. Oxygenating the body and flushing toxins out as we work up a sweat is very beneficial. Get at least three days of any enjoyable aerobic exercise. You'll only need about 30 minutes per day to have a substantial effect!

The food we eat and how we eat it has a large effect on our body's ability to detoxify. Some simple guidelines to follow:

- Eat regular, healthy meals created from the freshest ingredients. Make sure to include deeply colored vegetable and fruits and buy organic whenever possible. Avoid processed and fast food!

- Try and reduce/cut down on sweets and alcohol as they lack nutritional value and add to fat composition.

- Drink your water!!!! One of the best forms of detoxification is drinking the required amount of water to flush the body of unwanted toxins.

Holistic therapies such as Massage and Body Wraps help to draw toxins out from skin, muscles and organs aiding the body to return to its natural balance and stimulating tired systems back into action.

Click here for The SkinSpa’s Detoxifying Body Treatments

Wrinkle Eraser System

<img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ftb6eCY_kkY/Tjw_q493PKI/AAAAAAAAAGc/LCS0GxLf6UE/s320/guinot-acti-rides-flash-anti-wrinkle-serum.jpg" t$="true" width="142" />
The SkinSpa Announces the Debut of Guinot Acti-Rides Flash Wrinkle Eraser System!

Acti-Rides Flash was developed by Guinot’s world-renowned research team of dermatologists, biologists and chemists. The product contains an exclusive active ingredient complex, proprietary to Guinot, called Derm Liss which is comprised of: Hyaluronic Acid to improve cutaneous suppleness and elasticity and restore moisture and also Dynalift which forms a firming and enveloping film over the skin’s surface for micro-lifting effect.

Over time, skin tends to lose its youthful appearance, often appearing tired and drawn. Fine lines and wrinkles form on foreheads, near the eyes, around the mouth, etc ue to the slackeing of the epidermis and loss of support from the basal layer. Acti-Rides Flash restores the skin’s suppleness by supporting the dermis underneath the wrinkle. Using the pen applicator, pressure is applied to each side of the wrinkle, causing the connective tissue under the wrinkle to furrow and move. As a result of this movement, the loose basal layer is lifted, filling in the wrinkle from within and lifting the skin on the surface, lending for a more youthful appearance. Acti Rides Flash’s active ingredients also stimulate the production of elastic fibers, restoring density to the dermal layer and reinforcing the network of elastic fibers.

Acti-Rides Flash’s pen applicator, with 3 dermo-balls, is especially important in the smoothing process. The first dermo-ball stimulates the dermis, targeting the wrinkle in the lower skin layers and physically erasing the wrinkle in the skin’s surface. The two other dermo-balls help the active ingredients from the serum optimally penetrate the skin, thus restoring density to the dermis and boosting the skin’s level of elasticity.

It is recommended to use Acti-Rides Flash daily and apply to main facial wrinkles, working in an upward direction over the frown lines, over the crow’s feet and along the smile lines. That said, in only 2 minutes, you should notice that wrinkles are visibly erased and your face should look smoother and more youthful.

Source: http://www.guinotusa.com/home.php

Acne and Hormones

<img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kFsgdzCDmYA/Tjw5LMxUIhI/AAAAAAAAAGY/cv2hIX-SmJs/s200/dr.jpg" t$="true" width="141" />Is a Medical Approach the Best Treatment for your Acne?

No matter what age acne occurs, there is never a good time for a breakout. Too often, acne clients want immediate relief from a medical office or they visit an esthetician to find out what actions they can take to get rid of, or decrease, the breakout. To treat acne effectively an esthetician and physician will work together to minimize acne's underlying cause. Clients must be on a stable skin care regimen that maintains a good balance of oil and bacteria reduction and hydration levels to prevent breakouts. However, this regimen may change depending on the weather, season and what point a women is in her menstrual cycle.

Women may have naturally occurring, high levels of male hormones (androgens) which can cause increased bouts of acne, especially on the cheeks and jawline areas of the face. Androgen production can be reduced or blunted by taking hormone modulators prescribed by a medical professional.

Birth control pills have traditionally been the drug of choice by many physicians because they may cause testosterone (androgen) levels to drop. Higher levels of testosterone in both men and women causes increased oil production and frequency of acne breakouts. Although taking birth control bills may be the answer for some, it has many undesirable side effects and is not a very effective treatment for non-hormone related breakouts.

Spironolactone is a pharmaceutical aid that has also been proven effective in treating hormone related breakouts. It is actually a diuretic used to treat medical conditions, such as heart, liver, or kidney disease. It also helps block the release of excess hormones like testosterone. However, spironolactone must be taken regularly, or hormone production resumes when the medication is stopped. It is also important to note that patients taking spironolactone are carefully monitored by their doctor so that blood pressure and potassium levels do not change.

There are several clinical treatments for relief of acne breakouts, all of which require patience and adherence to a customized regimen for the best results. Seek out a specialized esthetician or medical professional on a regular basis who is familiar with the complexities of treating acne, and who can recommend treatments and products specifically designed for your skin and type of acne.

Keep in mind, acne is a complex and cyclical disease which comes and goes dependant on several factors, such as hormones, diet, heredity, and environmental and emotional conditions. It may take several different types of treatments and topical products to clear up acne completely.

Hyperpigmentation Correction for Acne-prone Skin

<img border="0" height="200px" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--14ee61oYBI/Thh9lJvT7nI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/HMyr4MqHVmY/s200/hyperpig.bmp" width="196px" />The two most common skin conditions and complaints are acne and hyperpigmentation and are often present simultaneously. The skin is an amazing organ which is in a constant state of response to protect the body from external and internal threats. Acne is an inherently inflamed skin condition and the skin will respond by turning dark; a condition known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). In addition, acne suffers often pick the skin, exacerbating inflammation and PIH.

Individuals with these skin conditions are often searching for that one miracle product that will cure all of their skin challenges. Unfortunately, it is impossible to address all skin concerns with just one product, as each involves multiple causes, and the ingredients needed to correct these issues must be strategically combined to ensure efficacy and compatibility.

Combining ingredients for clear skin

Hyperpigmentation typically requires multiple products for optimal results because the pigmenting process is a chain reaction occurring within the skin that involves the interacting of different cells and enzymes. By using multiple ingredients that help break up this chain, faster results can be achieved. The main ingredients that inhibit the production of these dark cells are arbutin, hydroquinone, undecylenoyl phenylalanine, phenylethyl resorcinol, and kojic, azelaic and lactic acids. They all work in different ways, making them all important for different reasons.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to have one product that contains all of these beneficial ingredients. Instead, complimentary products that work in combination together will help achieve the desired results. The ultimate goal for clear healthy skin is to lift excess melanin (dark cells) out of the skin for brighter, more even skin tone. One of the potential side effects of this process is the temporary thinning of the skin resulting in decreased UV protection, resulting in rebound pigmentation and darkening of the skin.

Why is UV protection so important?

UV protection is imperative when dealing with hyperpigmentation. Melanin is produced to prevent DNA damage caused by the sun and when we decrease the melanin in the skin, we are ultimately making the skin more vulnerable to UV damage. Providing the skin with additional UV protection is an important part of the skin lightening process. Broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sun protection should be used daily and reapplied every two hours when in direct sun.

In addition to lightening ingredients and sun protection, ingredients that fight free radical damage will provide increased protection and lead to faster, more consistent results. Some of the ingredients to help prevent free radical damage are vitamin E, glutathione, caffeine, milk thistle and borage seed oil or betula alba extracts that soothe inflammation. Creating a balanced regimen designed to decrease discoloration while providing UV protection can help lead to clear beautiful skin.

Daily home care is the key to correction

The correct daily skin care products can effectively fade existing hyperpigmentation and inhibit future melanin production. Fading pigmentation may take several weeks to achieve the desired results, patience and diligence are the key. Professional lightening treatments and chemical peels can be used to accelerate results and provide added lightening benefits.

PCA skin products and chemical peels are the preferred choice for correcting pigmented skin conditions and achieving results because of their safe formulations, clinical expertise and their understanding of the science of skin health.

Controlling acne and preventing hyperpigmentation

For hyperpigmentation with active acne; PCA A&C Synergy Serum and PCA Acne Gel help control breakouts while simultaneously controlling unwanted pigmentation. Acne Gel contains salicylic acid to dissolve impactions and azelaic acid to reduce PIH causing inflammation. A&C Synergy Serum is an advanced multifunctional product containing vitamin A (retinol) and vitamin C to control oil, reduced bacteria and lighten the skin. Weekly at-home treatments with a purifying mask can also be used in between professional acne treatments to keep the skin clear and minimize breakouts.

If PIH is of particular concern, consider adding PCA Brightening Therapy or Pigment Gel to any acne control regimen. These two products penetrate into varying layers of the skin to work together in perfect combination. Pigment Gel contains small molecules that effectively target hyperpigmentation in the upper layers of the skin (epidermis). Acidic ingredients encourage exfoliation, which is important to the pigment-lifting process. Brightening Therapy contrarily is formulated with molecules that penetrate deeper into the skin to inhibit the pigment-making process.

PCA chemical peels such as Sensi Peel or the appropriate PCA Peel can be used in conjunction with home care products to accelerate results and provide added lightening benefits.

Contact the spa for a clinical consultation to find out which Hyperpigmentation and Acne Regime is right for you and your specific skin concerns. 562-427-1025

Discover the Difference of Mineral Makeup

<img border="0" height="320px" i$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sbf0Dn2nrAQ/TgtrTZ6mAOI/AAAAAAAAAGM/fUw3dlqFZgo/s320/mineral+makeupl.jpg" width="259px" />
Most women have heard about mineral makeup over the last few years, but many women don’t know what sets it apart from other makeup options.

Mineral makeup is made up of all natural ingredients and minerals that are finely ground into a very fine powder and mixed with a variety of inorganic colorings to provide different shades. Mineral makeup is non-comedogenic, which means it does not block pores, allowing skin to breathe. Chemical-based makeup often feels heavy on the skin much like a mask. Mineral makeup feels much lighter, and often feels like you’re not wearing any makeup at all, leaving the skin looking very natural and fresh.

Women with sensitive skin due to rosacea, acne, or other skin issues can wear mineral makeup without aggravating their existing skin condition and in most cases anti-inflammatory ingredients will help facilitate healing. The anti-bacterial ingredients in mineral makeup also prevent bacteria from forming in the makeup preventing cross contamination on the skin. Brushes do not need to be sanitized after every use only gently wiped with a brush cleaner or soft tissue. Mineral makeup also does not contain harmful preservatives, parabens or talc that are included in many other types of makeup.

Women primarily use makeup to improve their appearance but mineral makeup actually helps improve and protect the skin. Most mineral makeup contains an SPF of 15-30 built in to help protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Sun protection is a great way to prevent premature signs of aging including sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles. Mineral makeup is great at hiding pre-existing wrinkles and fine lines because it contains zinc which helps reflect sunlight.

Another option for women looking to give their skin a much needed boost is a makeup primer. Primers are used to control oil and conceal skin problems from scars, enlarged pores and wrinkles. Primers form a base for your skin before applying makeup and can actually keep your makeup fresh and long- lasting. Most mineral makeup primers also contain all the non-pore clogging and nourishing ingredients as the mineral makeulp with other ingredients like blue algae extract, vitamin E, and antioxidants to calm the skin. The primers with bright yellow tint helps to calm hyperpigmentation and redness in the skin giving you an even, youthful tone as it fills in fine lines and wrinkles. Blue or lilac primers will help to cancel yellow in the skin for a refreshed, natural looking glow. Most mineral makeup lines will also offer bronzers which give skin a sheer, sun-kissed look year round.

When purchasing mineral makeup look for lines that are comprised of 100% minerals and all natural ingredients and do not contain talc, petro-chemicals, binders or fillers. Citrus essential oils are extracted from the rind on the fruits by the process of cold compressing.

Every oil has its own distinct aroma, and whether inhaled, massaeged into the skin or placed in a bath the molecules enter into the bloodstream and offer the body hundreds of powerful natural chemical constituents that stimulate an array of physical, emotional, and psychological responses. Inhaling an essential oil affects your mood and emotions and also release hormones to your organs and cells. Reactions can be calming, cooling , invigorating, soothing, energizing and more.

When essential oils are applied to the skin, they pelnetreate the demal (deeper) layer of the skin and interact with bood and lymph , connective tissue, oil and sweat glands, nerves, and hair follicles. The positive effects can include: balancing the mind body physiology, calming emotions, moisturizing and regerating the skin, acting as anti-inflammatories and promoting detoxification of waste and gegeneration of new cells.

High quality essentiaol oils are unadulterated ad have not skylnthetic fillers, suspenders, or added mineral oil to clog the bpores. Always read the ingredient label of any aromatheryp product you purchase, looking for 100 percent pure essential oils, preferably therapeutic grade and certified organic.

Its well known that and proven that artificial fragrance can be quite toxic. Please remember to create the most healthy environment for yourself and family. Surround yourself with the purest, most organic aromas possible-includeing personal care products, household and cleaning products , candles, incense and any essential oils that are used on the skin or inhaled.

Using just the right sweet fragrance as your selected aromatherapy oil can change your whole mood and outlook to a positive note. This stimulates your body’s senses, and studies have actually shown that this also goes a long ways towards lowering or eliminating negative feelings and emotions that might have plagued you throughout a stressful day. The pleasant fragrance of the aromatherapy oils reduce tension and stress, as well as paving the way towards an oasis of calm feelings, positive emotions, and also in many people, triggering a very creative thought process.

These types of fragrances and sweet scents from flowers have been used for centuries to re-invigorate the body and mind. If you have a headache, a quick aromatherapy session can do wonders to eliminate the headache and refresh your perspective, especially since these days, many headaches have their root cause based in stress and tension.

Aromatherapy can be used as just a scent or fragrance in a complimentary relaxing atmosphere, and can also be used as a massage, where the sweet scent of the aromatherapy oil is very conducive to the overall relaxation. But it is important that the oils be chosen with care by someone who understands aromatherapy techniques. Depending on how the oil is used, it must be diluted at different levels in order to achieve the results that will be the most effective for you.

Some of the flowers that are used for typical aromatherapy include roses, jasmine, lotus blossoms, citrus flowers, and lavender. The beneficial effects of using these scents in an aromatherapy session have been well known for thousands of years. In fact, the ancient Egyptians as well as the Greeks and Romans used that culture’s equivalent of aromatherapy to achieve the same mental and also physical results that are seen today. Even today, vast quantities of the flowers and blossoms used in aromatherapy that have been found to be most effective are grown in the areas in and around Egypt.

What kinds of things can an aromatherapy session help with? It can be a tremendous aid to reduce depression, easing anxiety, reducing stress and tension, and raising one’s spirits in general. It can also help to stabilize mood swings, such as those sometimes found in cases of post-natal or post-partum depression. Since aromatherapy also helps to calm frazzled nerves, it has also been found to be a tremendous boon to those who suffer from chronic insomnia.

The benefits of the different fragrances available for aromatherapy are continually finding new benefits and uses. For example, rose oil has historically symbolized purity and innocence, and has been found to be very effective in helping to eliminate feelings of disappointment and jealousy, and removing emotional blocks that stand between you and happiness. In fact, rose oil has been found to be a sensual and stimulating aphrodisiac, which promotes feelings of love, and may help to overcome impotence or frigidity.

Learn what aromatherapy can do for you with the right oils, and make the time to experience all that a good aromatherapy session can do for you. The benefits are tremendous, but cannot be really appreciated until you have experienced them yourself.

Contact the spa for more information about Armatherapy Spa Treatments - 562-427-1025

NEW! Both of these combine to create a protective film on the skin, which is called the acid mantle. For most people, the pH of the acid mantle is 4.5 to 5.5. Our slightly acidic skin helps to fight off harmful bacteria. Many of the contaminants that might enter our skin, such as chemicals and harmful bacteria, are alkaline in nature (i.e., they have a pH of higher than 7). Bacteria love alkalinity and the acidity keeps them away. The acid mantle also protects skin from losing its moisture. If we strip the acid mantle away that can cause a lot of damage to our skin.

Skin acid mantle- how do we strip it?

We strip the acid mantle by using alkaline soaps, cleansers and acne medications. Sun exposure and dehydration also strips the acid mantle. Those with oily skin are in a great rush to remove all the oils and manage to strip the acid mantle along with the much needed water from the skin. This exposes skin not only to bacteria but also the chances of triggering eczema, acne, dehydration, aging, etc.

Skin care and acid mantle

Maintaining the skin’s pH is vital to protecting ourselves from harmful bacteria which can lead to acne, infection, irritation and premature aging (wrinkles). It is important for us to know the pH of our cleansers, moisturizers, makeup and other products we use so we don’t damage our skin by removing the protective oils and acid mantle from our skin.

Acne and acid mantle

Many of those who have acne wash their face too frequently and use drying agents such as sodium laurel sulfate, alcohol, benzyl peroxide, salicylic acid and glycolic acid. As a result they dry their skin totally, stripping it of its protective oils and water. The acne may or may not go away, but the protective acid mantle surely goes away exposing the skin to more infections. Keep a healthy acid mantle on the skin and protect yourself. Use AHA mixed cleansers only 2-3 times a week, alternating with a gentle non-drying cleanser to maintain the acidity of the skin, especially in dry climates and during winter months. And use pH balanced products for hydration and protection (SPF) to keep skin looking soft, hydrated and youthful.

Call or stop by the spa for a professional recommendation to maintain a healthy acid mantle for your precious skin. 562.427.1025

Chemical Peels

My favorite and most popular chemical peel is the Sensi by PCA. Formulated for ethnic skin and other extremely sensitive skin types. It will strengthen and brighten the skin while helping to treat sun damage and other forms of hyperpigmentation (dark spots). Also provides anit-inflammatory, anti-acne and antibacterial action, making it an excellent choice for helping to calm rosacea.

The Sensi peel is my favorite because it can be used on the very darkest skin to the most sensitive skin with amazing results. A mild tingle will be felt during the application but will subside within a few moments. PCA corrective serums are applied right on top of the peel to enhance penetration of the active ingredients. Some of the corrective ingredients like Vitamin C, Retinol, Kojic Acid, Peptides and Epidermal Growth Factors are customized to each individual’s skin care needs and concerns.
Sensi peel is formulated with Lactic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA), Azelaic, Kojic Acid and Arbutin.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are often thought of as very aggressive and producing substantial discomfort. PCA Professional™ TCA peels are very different from the standard. The TCA solutions are blended with many ingredients to produce dramatic results without the discomfort and downtime associated with the application of a straight TCA peels.

For maximum results, I recommend a series of 4-6 peels and on-going maintenance. Home care support products before and after a chemical peel are paramount. There is little to no "down-time" associated with most of the PCA chemical peels and most patients experience a slight tightening of the skin with mild flaking only lasting 3-5 days.

Individuals who should consider a chemical peel suffer with hyperpigmentation (brown spots), fine lines and wrinkles, desire smoother skin and/or suffer from conditions such as acne and rosacea. Only allow a PCA trained and certified individual to perform a PCA chemicals peel. Here are some really nice before and after pictures for chemical peels provided by PCA Skin.

For more information visit our chemical peel page or call the spa for a free consultation.
http://theskinspausa.com/chemical_peels

Professional Products vs Over The Counter Products (OTC's)

Why Use Professional Skincare Products?

The Value is in the Results

It's a common thought while waiting to pay for a professional skincare product with what seems to be a high number on the price tag: "Is this really THAT much better than the department or drug store?" In short, the answer is "Yes!"

Understanding the ingredients....

Yes, the professional product is more expensive, but the reason is the active ingredients are much more concentrated than the drug store or over the counter (OTC) brands, so you need to use MUCH LESS per application. Also, the professional ingredients are stronger (higher percentages of active ingredients) and much more potent and effective.

The point of offering quality professional products is not to sell mass quantity like the drug stores, but to give our clients skincare formulations that are the most effective and do not contain useless fillers or harmful chemicals. Unfortunately these ingredients are abundant in OTC products and can be harmful to your skin and your health. Some of the big ones to avoid are; sodium laurel sulfate, mineral oil, petrolatum, alcohol, propylene glycol, lanolin, talc, artificial fragrance and color, to name a few.

Guinot, Epicuren, PCA Skin, Jane Iredale and Jan Marini, are the brands we offer at The SkinSpa Institute because they contain the highest quality active ingredients, a variety of balanced formulas, and the substantial research that goes into creating and testing their products.

When recommended by well trained and experienced estheticians, the value and results of professional skincare products emphatically outweighs and outperforms the OTC brands. And if you compared the amount of product used against the cost, you'd find that the price difference isn't nearly that much higher.
If you have any questions about which products are best suited for you skin type and condition or how to properly use our products post your question below or click the link below for an online consultation form.

http://theskinspausa.com/consultation

Epicuren's Tea Tree Lip Balm is The Bomb!

JUST. The research sponsored by Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP).

“When many people are curtailing spending on vacations and other big-ticket items, massage is an ideal and lower-cost option for reducing stress,” said ABMP. “Massage therapy has been shown to reduce stress hormones, relieve anxiety and depression, strengthen the immune system and improve attentiveness, so it’s an excellent strategy for challenging times.”

The nation’s leading mental health association, Mental Health America, recommends massage therapy as a way to diffuse stress. Some employers are turning to massage therapy to help employees cope with uncertain times and increased workloads.

As employers are looking for ways to manage workplace productivity and stress, perhaps using fewer employees to do more work, some are bringing chair massage into the mix, it’s an inexpensive way to maintain loyalty, and manage anxiety and lost work time.

Another research finding was that visits to all types of health professionals, including medical doctors, declined slightly in 2010 as compared to 2008.

This is not surprising in a year of belt-tightening throughout the economy. It may be a matter of postponing rather than forgoing care. Consumers should keep in mind massage could be useful in helping stave off routine doctor visits, co-pays and missed work time because of the immunity-boosting power of massage.

Winterize Your Skin

A popular spa favorite is Epicuren's Cinnamon Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub to exfoliate AND hydrate the skin. This product is one of the best ways to get rid of excess dead skin cells and also provide your body with much needed moisture during the winter months. A little goes a long way and the smell is absolutely Yummy! An indulging spa experience you can enjoy at home! This ancient Polynesian philosophy stated that every single thing in the world seeks harmony and love. Traditionally performed by healers called "kahunas" in conjunction with herbs, purifying, salts, and prayer, it was often shared among family members and passed from one generation to the next.
The style of Lomi Lomi massage is characterized by its very large, broad strokes, as well as two-handed stokes that enlist the forearms and elbows. Lomi Lomi technique covers a broad area of the body and works the muscles often simultaneously to encourage the continuous flow of love and harmony, and to wash harmful thoughts, patterns, memories and behaviors out of the cells of our bodies to make way for more beneficial modes of thought. Once positive energy is permitted to flow unhindered, total body healing is accomplished.

Before a Lomi Lomi massage begins, the massage therapist will say a quiet prayer to request effective healing. In some cases, the client is asked during the prayer to state their healing intention. It also isnt uncommon for the therapist to hum or chant during the Lomi Lomi massage. The Lomi Lomi prayer and the acknowledgment of the existence of a higher power are seen as integral to the overall effectiveness of the massage.

Lomi Lomi produces positive effects, both physically and emotionally. Based on the notion that love is the source of overall well-being, this ancient technique works to cancel the negative effects of stress on the body. Lomi Lomi aids in the healing of our muscles and tissues, but also works on a spiritual level by letting the body know that it is loved.

This is the key difference between Lomi Lomi and most other massage techniques. The kahuna has always worked on an intuitive level, sending a message of love from one being to the next through his or her hands. This may seem like common sense to most but skin cancer and melanoma are on the rise and extra protection should be taken. Did you know that applying your SPF at 8 am before going to work will lose its efficacy by 11am? By lunch time you could be completely unprotected from Ultraviolet light.

What’s the difference between UVA and UVB and do I need both?

This is a question I get asked all the time. The first step is to understand how sun exposure and UVA and UVB light or rays affect the skin. To put it simply: UVA refers to the aging rays and UVB for burning. So yes, you want to be protected from both these Ultraviolet rays. Make sure SPF ratings on sunscreen packaging states both UVA and UVB protection. If it doesn’t say it on the bottle it’s not in the product.

To Tan or Not to Tan?

Most people feel the sun gives them a healthy looking glow. A suntan is actually the physical proof of ultraviolet damage to deeper (dermal) layers of the skin. Overexposure to both types of rays (UVA and UVB) leads to burns, skin cancer, hyperpigmentation and premature aging of the skin.

Ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays are shorter and cause sunburn and some forms of skin cancer while Ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays – which make up 95% of the light that reaches the earth - penetrates the skin more deeply. They are believed to be responsible for DNA damage and melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer-according to the Skin Cancer Foundations. (SCF, skincancer.org) And as far as tanning beds go, one word: Don’t

Sunscreen is a Critical part of our Daily Skincare Regiment

The SPF factor has been debated for years – but how high is enough? Darker skin tones have more natural protection but industry experts agree that SPF 15 is the minimum everyone should wear daily because it blocks 93% of the UVB rays. Anything less doesn’t give enough protection. Also, if the SPF is in to your makeup or moisturizer it minimizes the effectiveness of both and the added SPF adds an extra chemical component to facial products that we don’t need. That SPF 15 in your moisturizer may actually be only an SPF 8 or 6 and needs to be reapplied throughout the day to be effective.

How Much Sunscreen is Too Much?

Just remember any sunscreen over SPF 40 is full of all kinds of chemicals, fillers, dyes, waxes and artificial fragrance. There is no such thing as an all day SPF protection. That SPF 70 at the drug store or even the SPF 100 (are they kidding?) is pure marketing hype and should be avoided, especially when applying on children. And always look for maximum sun protection products which contain both UVA and UVB to insure you’re getting broad spectrum coverage.

What’s the Difference Between a Chemical and Physical (mineral) Sunscreen?

Another really good question that’s easily answered. There are two kinds of sunscreens, the kind from natural occurring ingredients and those engineered in a lab. Chemical sunscreens absorb and neutralize UV rays where mineral or physical sunscreens work by reflecting the sun’s rays. Some common chemical ingredients are: avobenzone (parsol 1789), octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, ecamsule (Mexorly SX), homosalate, Padimate A and Padimate O.

There are only two FDA-approved mineral ingredients: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Zinc oxide has the added benefit of naturally soothing inflamed skin. Many sunscreens mix chemical and mineral ingredients to create a more acceptable product that is lighter and less irritating but still effective.

Do Antioxidants Help with Sun Protection?

The latest sun protection formulations are infused with all sorts of free-radical fighters like pomegranate and vitamin C. These antioxidants act as sponges that attract and absorb damaging molecules. They are effective in repairing existing damage to the skin and can also help to preserve the color and potency of the product.

What about Mineral Makeup?

A great alternative for daily sun protection is the use of a 100% mineral makeup product. Most mineral makeup has natural mineral ingredients with an SPF 15 or higher and can be reapplied during the day for continual protection. The mineral ingredients are also great for people with rosacea or sensitive skin as well as acne prone and oily skin. Use caution when choosing a mineral makeup product. Just because it says mineral does Not mean it’s a 100% natural mineral product. Most OTC (over the counter) products may contain titanium dioxide or zinc but will also contain a slew of other chemicals and fillers that clog pores and cause sensitivity.

Seek Professional Products and Recommendations

Ultimately we need to ask ourselves: do I want to put a bunch of chemicals on my face or use natural ingredients? Only you can decide, so make an educated decision. Know what the ingredients are before you buy your products and seek advice from a qualified skincare professional. My recommendation is to use SPF 15 during winter months and SPF 30+ during summer and avoid chemical ingredients whenever possible. Although most chemical ingredients are considered safe, they can lead to skin sensitivities and clogged pores. Chemical sunblocks will provide higher SPF protection but should be used in the water and long exposure to sun. All sunscreens need to be reapplied throughout the day and after swimming for the best sun protection.

Please call or visit the spa for our product specific sun protection recommendations. 562.427.1025

Know Your Skin Type For Beautiful Skin

Analyzing your own skin type will help you choose the right skin care products. The key to developing an effective skin care routine is knowing which products will work before buying them. There's a lot of misinformation and confusion out there about what actually is skin type and I am here to help clear things up so you can purchase your skin care products for maximum benefit with results.

Do you know your skin type?

Contrary to popular belief there are only 4 skin types. You will fall into one of the 4 skin type categories; normal, oily, combination or dry. Skin type is genetically coded; a hereditary trait like blue eyes or red hair and it will not change over time. With the exception of menopause, then all bets are off. The skin's oil production will diminish resulting in a dryer skin type. More often than not, it's our skin conditions that give us trouble.

Skin conditions are ever changing and are the result of outside forces, as opposed to what's in our DNA. Skin problems such as acne, dehydration, pigmentation, sensitivity, rosacea, etc. are all conditions that are caused by a combination of factors such as environment, diet, stress and/or lifestyle. The main difference is that our skin type is something we cannot change and skin conditions are something we can change or improve.

It's important to know your skin type when developing a core home care program for your facial skin. The skin on our face is usually different than the skin on our bodies and must be treated with special care. Our Core facial products should consist of an appropriate cleanser, toner and moisturizer for our specific skin type. Skin conditions, on the other hand will be more effectively corrected with auxiliary or add-on products. As conditions change, we want to create stability by continuing with core products to maintain the balance and health of our skin. Conditions of the skin can be very complex and play a huge role not only in compromising the health of our skin but they can also negatively affect our confidence and how we view ourselves and others. I will be discussing different types of skin conditions individually at length later on.

What is Your skin type?

Skin type is determined by how much oil your skin normally produces under normal conditions. This is the same if you are male or female. Although men typically have thicker skin, the basic structure and biological functioning mechanisms are the same as in women. The following is a general guideline for determining your individual skin type.

Normal Skin

A normal skin type will have oil glands that do not over produce or under produce oil secretions or sebum. Producing sebum is our skins way of lubricating the surface of our bodies to create a waterproof barrier to protect it from chemicals and a harsh environment. People with a normal skin type rarely have problems with acne or enlarged pores and their skin will have a smooth and refined appearance. This type should choose core home care products that will promote the healthy function of the skin. Gentle cleansing, toning and moisturizing without chemicals are best for this skin type.

Oily Skin

An oily skin type has highly active or enlarged oil glands all over the face, neck and sometimes the body. The skin will feel greasy and look shiny within a few hours after cleansing. This skin type characteristically has enlarged pores and will be prone to blackheads, white heads and acne. Paradoxically when oily skin is over stimulated and stripped with harsh chemicals and drying agents it will actually produce more oil creating a vicious cycle that's hard to break.

This skin type should only use non-sulfate foaming cleansers for oily skin that helps control the oil, not dry it up altogether. It's very important for this skin type to get as much water into the skin as possible through a hydrating toner or astringent and the use of a lightweight, oil free moisturizer. Oily skin is very prone to a condition called dehydration (lack of water). This causes the skin to feel oily and dry at the same time. Talk about confusing.

This skin type should seek out a qualified (licensed) skin care therapist to consult with on the appropriate products for their skin type and conditions. They should avoid all over the counter (OTC's) facial products because they contain sulfates, petrol chemicals and fragrance that will complicate and make oily skin worse.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is the unlucky skin type. It is characteristic of an overproduction of oil in the nose, forehead and chin (T-zone) areas and dry or normal on the cheeks and neck. This skin type is difficult to keep balanced because it will change with the seasons and will be complicated by various skin conditions. Combination skin will become excessively oily in the t-zone area during the hot summer months and in winter feel dry and flaky on the cheeks and neck. This skin type will want to choose products specifically designed for combination skin. A gently, non-drying cleanser with a hydrating toner and light to medium weight moisturizer that contains a combination of water and essential oils will help balance combination skin.

Most skin types will need to rotate products when the seasons change and this is especially true for a combination type. If the skin feels oilier during summer then switch to a cleanser for oily skin or use an oil absorbing moisturizer just in the t-zone area. The winter months can be especially drying and using a creamy cleanser and more hydrating moisturizer will usually do the trick. It is not uncommon to use oily skin type products for the t-zone areas and more hydrating products for the rest of the face. This skin type can be very complicated and should seek professional recommendations for best results.

Dry Skin

A dry skin type is characterized by an underactive oil gland and the surface of the skin will appear dry and flaky and feel uncomfortably tight. An oil dry skin type should not to be confused with a water dry skin condition (dehydration). Although dry skin can also be dehydrated (lack of water) the dryness is usually systemic. Meaning someone with a dry skin type will have dry skin all over the body, not just on the face. The skin on the face as well as the body will feel very uncomfortable, tight and even itchy unless they put lotion on right away. Uncovering the reason for dry skin is an important step in improving the allover health of the skin.

This skin type will need lots of natural oils in their home care products to compensate for the under active oil production. Core products should consist of a creamy cleanser, hydrating toner and heavy moisturizer containing essential oils. Mineral oil and petroleum based oils will not benefit this (or any) skin type. These types of oils contain a very large molecule and will not absorb into the skin. They just sit on top of the skin and should be used only as lubricates and not used on the face or body. Essential and natural oils like avocado, neroli, lavender, rose, etc., will absorb into the skin, giving it relief from dryness.

Visit or call The SkinSpa Institute for a Free Skin-Type Consultation or for Professional Product Recommendations. Wrong. While teenagers do make up the largest percentage of the acne-afflicted population, they're not alone in their suffering. Acne strikes adults, too - more than half of all adult women and about a quarter of adult men. And these figures appear to be climbing. As the world begins to wake up to adult acne, it's becoming clear that the psychological, social and physical effects of this condition don't diminish with age.

As we begin to recognize acne as a condition for all ages, we can find better ways to fight it. Estheticians, like everyone else, are beginning to see acne as an adult problem. With reported cases of adult acne on the rise, doctors and estheticians will be considering the special causes and unique effects of this condition on older patients. And as public awareness increases, more people are likely to consider seeking treatment and take the first steps toward an acne-free existence.

A Tid Bit about Stress!

Stress has been linked to many diseases, including heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes and certain cancers.
Stress creates a vicious cycle that can have a cumulative effect - it disrupts systems in your body and makes you more susceptible to anxiety and depression.

Heal Stress through massage - an effective stress reliever and a healing relaxation practice.
